By Delphine Panissod – Real Estate Advisor in the Dordogne
Discover Monpazier, one of the most remarkable bastides in the Dordogne: rich heritage, artisan shops, local businesses, an exceptional quality of life, and charming properties in the heart of the Périgord.

Some villages are places you visit once.
Others keep drawing you back, almost without reason, simply for the pleasure of wandering through their streets.
Monpazier is one of those places.
I was there again yesterday, on a sunny Sunday in June. Beneath the famous medieval market hall, locals and visitors gathered for an afternoon of dancing in a warm and friendly atmosphere. It perfectly captured the spirit of this village: one of the most beautiful in France, yet above all a lively, authentic community that remains vibrant long after the summer crowds have gone.
Founded in 1284 by Edward I of England, then Duke of Aquitaine, Monpazier is often regarded as the perfect example of a medieval bastide. Its grid layout, elegant arcades and magnificent central square have remained remarkably intact over the centuries.
The village is officially listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) and has also been awarded the Ville et Métiers d'Art label in recognition of its rich artistic and craft heritage.
Walking through its cobbled streets, you sometimes feel as though time has stood still... while still enjoying all the comforts of a thriving village.

Monpazier enjoys an ideal location in southern Dordogne:
43 km (27 miles) from Bergerac, around 45 minutes by car
Approximately 45 km (28 miles) from Sarlat-la-Canéda
Close to Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the neighbouring Lot-et-Garonne department
This location allows residents to enjoy the peace and beauty of the Périgord countryside while remaining within easy reach of major tourist attractions and economic centres.

Unlike some tourist destinations that become quiet once autumn arrives, Monpazier enjoys a genuine year-round community life.
Its weekly market, events beneath the medieval hall, independent shops, cafés and restaurants create a welcoming atmosphere throughout the seasons.
During my most recent visit, the terraces were busy and the market hall hosted a traditional dance event. It is precisely this authenticity that attracts many newcomers to the village.

One of Monpazier's greatest strengths is its vibrant community of artisans and creators.
Among the many workshops and boutiques are:
The village is home to more than twenty artisan workshops open to the public, contributing greatly to its unique character and vitality.

Southern Dordogne has long attracted an international clientele, particularly from the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands and, more recently, the United States.
Monpazier is no exception.
Its exceptional heritage, preserved environment, proximity to Bergerac Airport and relaxed Périgord lifestyle make it highly appealing to overseas buyers.
As a real estate advisor working throughout the Dordogne, I regularly meet international clients looking for exactly this type of village: authentic, lively, welcoming and full of character.

Beyond its beauty, Monpazier possesses a rare quality: it is not simply a picturesque backdrop, but a genuine place to live.
Whenever I stroll through its narrow streets, beneath its arcades or around its market square, I understand why so many people choose to settle here permanently.
Perhaps that is the true luxury today: living in a place steeped in history, where people still take the time to chat in the village square while an orchestra plays and neighbours dance beneath the medieval hall on a Sunday afternoon.
